Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market – Downtown
Kelowna / Nor-kwa-stin
Nor-kwa-stin - Kelowna is a Secwepemctsín derived word. Its name comes from the story of August Gillard, an early settler who crawled from an underground shelter just as a group of First Nation people passed by. The local people called out, “Kim-ach-touch”, meaning Brown Bear. Over time, this became Kelowna, meaning Grizzly Bear, which was easier for colonizers to pronounce. The Secwepemc name for the area around Kelowna was Nor-kwa-stin, "hard black rock", relating to the rocks used for sharpening flints for arrowheads.
Popular demand founded this “make it, bake it, or grow it” downtown market.
Entering its sixth year, the Kelowna Farmers Satellite Market Downtown features between 55 and 60 vendors that have “overflowed” from the highly popular Saturday market. The Sunday edition takes place in Kelowna’s Kerry Park, offering a variety of handmade craft items, baked goods, and farm-fresh produce.
Hot food service and many of the same organized festivals and events found at the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market can be enjoyed here as well. This is a quieter alternative (or additional!) opportunity for local crafters, bakers, farmers, and Kelowna’s residents and visitors to connect.
